Cryptocurrency ASIC Mining Rig Guide
Updated April 19, 2020

ASIC mining rigs consist of one or more ASIC miners and power supplies. A step up transformer may also be required for some power supplies depending on your mains voltage. And in the case of the AvalonMiner 741, a controller is also required. We will discuss each component below along with some relevant considerations.
ASIC miners
Each ASIC miner is designed to mine cryptocurrencies that utilize a specific hash algorithm or set of hash algorithms. The hashrate and power of the miners affect mining profitability.
Specifications
Miner | Hash Algorithm | Hashrate | Power |
---|---|---|---|
Canaan AvalonMiner 741 | SHA-256 | 7.3 TH/s | 1150 W |
Bitmain Antminer L3+ | Scrypt | 504 MH/s | 800 W |
Bitmain Antminer D3 | X11 | 15 GH/s | 1200 W |
Bitmain Antminer D3 (Newest Batch) | X11 | 19.3 GH/s | 1200 W |

Power supplies
You can either use a conventional desktop computer PSU for your ASIC miner or use a PSU built by the manufacturer of the ASIC miner. Both should operate the same. However, conventional computer PSUs may offer higher reliability given the larger volume and number of years in existence.

Step up transformers
A step up transformer is required where the voltage required by the PSU is higher than your mains voltage. For example, a PSU requiring 220 VAC where only 110 VAC is available would require a step up transformer. We suggest avoiding them if possible since they waste energy and produce heat.

Parts to make controller for AvalonMiner 741
The AvalonMiner 741 requires a controller which goes between the miner and the Internet connection. Each controller can operate up to 20 AvalonMiner 741 units. Although you could purchase one from Canaan, we recommend that you use a Raspberry Pi as it can be repurposed if you get rid of you miners. The SD card is used to store the firmware for the controller and is inserted into the Raspberry Pi during use.
